The investigation into the shooting death of a Dumas man last Thursday remains under investigation.
John Calhoun Ward
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Trooper Gabriel Medrano, the Texas Rangers are continuing their investigation into the shooting death of John Calhoun Ward, IV, age 38. The officer involved shooting took place around 9:20 p.m. on Peach Ave.
While the investigation is ongoing, the DPS has provided some additional information regarding the case.
The DPS states that “according to the preliminary investigation Calhoun had obtained a pistol and pointed it at his girlfriend, threatening to kill her but was interrupted by the Dumas police officer’s arrival. Armed with a gun, Calhoun confronted the police officer at the door and pointed the gun at the officer. Calhoun was then shot by the officer and was later pronounced dead at the Moore County hospital. Calhoun’s girlfriend, who has credited the Dumas police officer with saving her life, was also transported to the hospital for injuries sustained in the domestic assault, but has since been released. The officer was not injured.”
Calhoun’s body was scheduled to have an autopsy conducted Monday afternoon and the Texas Rangers will continue to investigate the incident, according to Medrano.
