Another round of storms hit Moore County over the weekend. According to information provided by the National Weather Service Dumas received just under an inch of rain along with large hail and damaging winds.
Storms began producing hail in Moore County at around 2:30 pm on Saturday, June 12. The initial hail that fell at the onset of the storm was about one inch in diameter. The largest hail reporter in Dumas was two and a half inches in diameter and fell around 3:20. As the storm moved northeast towards Sunray the hail got substantially larger and wind speeds picked up significantly.
At 3:14 pm a tornado was spotted by storm chasers and Moore County Sheriff Bo DeArmond southwest of Sunray. The tornado touched down briefly but stayed over open country and no damage from the storm was reported.
According to Dumas Fire Department Chief Jenkins, Dumas Firefighters responded to a call at 7:24 pm on Saturday evening at the 1600 block of South Binkley where three fifth wheel trailers were blown off of their foundations due to excessive straight-line winds.
As the storm approached Sunray, the hail stones rose in size from two inches in diameter to four inches in diameter, or roughly the size of a grapefruit.
The largest hail stone to fall during the Saturday storm measured six inches in diameter. According to information provided by the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the largest hail stone on record in the United States fell in Nebraska in 2003 and measured 7 inches in diameter.
