Sunray 8th boys win Canadian relays

Friday was a good day for Sunray Middle School boys track. The 8th grade boys edged out Stratford for first place in the Canadian Junior High Relays while the 7th grade boys placed a respectable third in their division.
Sunray's 8th grade boys picked up first place finishes in the 4x400 relay, the 1600 (Alex Alcantar) and the 200 (Ethan Brotherton). Those wins, coupled with strong finishes in many other events, gave the Cats six more points than second place Stratford, who finished the meet with 103 points.
The 7th grade Cats posted 122.25 points to take third in their division. Canadian won the meet with 146 points and Stratford was second with 125.5 points.
Helping to lead the way for the 7th grade boys were first place finishers Miguel Castellanes, 1600; Xavier Jimenez, 110 hurdles; Luis Cadena, triple jump; and the 4x200 relay team.
The boys also dominated the 300 hurdles. Cadena won the event followed by teammates Jimenez and Judge Shirley in second and third respectively.
Sunray's 8th grade girls placed fifth in their division with 49.5 points. Canadian won the 8th grade girls division with 218 points. The 7th grade girls placed seventh in their division with 18 points and Canadian took first with 199 points.
The 8th grade girls did have three first place finishers in the meet including Zoie Landers in the 200, Rachel Peeples in the discus and Makayla Dowling in the shot put.
