While severe winter weather approaches the Texas panhandle, everyone needs to know how to be prepared for the extreme cold and changing weather. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, ice, sleet, snow and freezing rain.
The National Weather Service refers to winter storms as the "Deceptive Killers" because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Instead, people die of hypothermia from prolonged exposure to the cold just because they were not prepared on how to stay safe in the cold.
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, (FEMA), disasters can happen at anytime and anywhere without warning. Citizens need to know how to be prepared in any given emergency. This can be life-saving knowledge.
Before winter approaches, make an emergency kit for the family.
