A Dumas man lost his life and two other Dumas men were injured in a two-vehicle accident that took place Wednesday, Dec. 22, on US Highway 287 about four miles south of Cactus.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Carlos Garcia, 34, of Gruver, was driving a 2000 Freightliner truck tractor towing a semi-trailer.  Behind him was a 1995 Chevrolet S10 pickup driven by 48-year-old Jose Mendoza of Dumas, along with his passengers 63-year-old Sebastian Sierra and 28-year-old Pablo Gutierrez, both of Dumas.

The tractor-trailer came to a rest in the center turn around facing west. The S10 pickup came to rest in the center median facing north.

Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene by Moore County Justice of the Peace Barbara Mulanax. Sierra was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo with non-life-threatening injuries. Gutierrez was also taken to Northwest Texas Hospital with serious injuries. The truck driver was not injured.

The DPS states both drivers and the two passengers in the S10 were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Texas Highway Patrol Troopers investigated the accident. The crash remains under investigation.
