A one-vehicle accident just north of Sunray on Wednesday, Feb. 27 claimed the life of a Dumas resident.

According to a report from Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Cindy Barkley, 60-year-old Kimball Hiner of Dumas died at the scene of the accident, which took place 2 1/2 miles north of Sunray along FM 119.

The DPS report indicates Hiner appears to have fallen asleep at the wheel of a 2001 Chevrolet Tracker. The vehicle then veered off to the west of the roadway, went airborne and crashed on the ground on its nose.

Hiner, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The DPS says no other accidents were involved in the crash, and the road was dry at the time of the accident.

Barkley said the crash remains under investigation, and information may be updated at a later date.
