A 34-year-old Dumas man and two of his children, ages 5 and 9, lost their lives in a two-vehicle accident Saturday night in Potter County.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Trey Tipton, of Dumas, lost his life in the crash, as did his 5-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son. His 13-year-old daughter was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo with life-threatening injuries.
Tipton was traveling northbound on US Highway 87/287 in a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro in Potter County about 12 miles north of Amarillo. The DPS report says a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, driven by 35-year-old Mario Alberto, of Amarillo, was "according to the preliminary crash investigation and an eye witness statement... traveling south in the northbound lanes and crashed head on into (Tipton's Camaro)."
The DPS report states Alberto is believed to have been drinking alcohol.
Potter County Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson pronounced Tipton and his 5- and 9-year-old children dead at the scene, along with Alberto, who was not wearing his seat belt. Tipton and all of his children were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
According to the DPS, JP Jackson has ordered an autopsy for both drivers.
"The crash remains under investigation," says the DPS. "Information may change, be corrected, or added based on the investigators' findings."
