Dumas United Supermarket Store Director Tomas Vargas cuts a ribbon held by Dumas/Moore County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carl Watson, left, and Board Member Ben Maples Friday to mark the opening of a new Starbucks facility located in the Dumas United as Starbucks employees and Chamber members look on.  The facility will offer coffee and other drinks, sandwiches, and a variety of other coffee-related merchandise.  It opens for business June 29.

Moore County fans of Starbucks will no longer have to travel to Amarillo to get their coffee fix.  On Friday, June 26, officials of the Dumas/Moore County Chamber of Commerce gathered with managers and staff from United Supermarkets and Starbucks Coffee Company for a ribbon cutting in the United Supermarket in Dumas to mark the opening of a Starbucks facility inside the supermarket.

Located next to the meat market and bakery just inside the front door, the new facility opens Monday, June 29 at 7:00 am for business.  Trained baristas will serve all the drinks and coffees Starbucks is famous for, as well as offering sandwiches, bagged coffees, and other merchandise.  Starbucks in United Supermarket will be open until 9:00 pm.

"It is something that has been in the works for a little bit," said United Store Director Tomas Vargas.  "We thought it was something that the town of Dumas needed.  I think everybody is excited about it."

Right now customers will have to take their drinks and food to go, but Vargas says that will change.  "There will be a seating area. … I think we will have two table tops," he said.

Starbucks is adding 16 jobs to the Dumas economy.  The newly trained baristas were on hand Friday for the ribbon cutting.  After the ceremony, they went back to work getting ready for Monday's grand opening.

Dumas Mayor Bob Brinkmann said,  "I am really excited to have Starbucks here.  It is a really great addition to our town.  A lot of people are excited.  I wish them the best of luck and success in Dumas."

Dumas/Moore County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carl Watson said he was amazed at the response when he announced the opening on Facebook.  Within a couple of days, the post received more responses than there are people in  Moore County.  "As usual, we are very excited to have another wonderful venture in Dumas and Moore County," he said Friday.  Starbucks is a well-known brand throughout the country, if not the world.  It will certainly bring added visibility to our community."
