Bronson Baxter will be a junior at Dumas High School and he has already made a big impact on the wrestling mat and he continues to do so on the national level representing Dumas.

When asked what he enjoys about wrestling Baxter said, “It’s a sport that a lot of people find difficult like the grind of it that I enjoy. It’s a sport that keeps me involved.” His dad, Kurt Baxter who was the Dumas wrestling coach from 1995-2006 said, “He’s been doing this since he was three years old and to see him carry on the Dumas wrestling tradition and compete at the National level with like minded kids is awesome.” He added, “Bronson knows his body, knows what he can eat before matches. He has the determination on his own to do the little stuff. The other night it was pushing midnight and he hadn’t got his lift in for the day so he went and did it on his own. He has the determination and grit on his own to succeed.”

Baxter has hopes in competing at the collegiate level. He said he’d wrestle for anyone but has a big time school that he hopes will notice him.” I’ll wrestle anywhere honestly but I really like Ohio State. They have a great program over there and It’ll be cool if they just notice me,” said Baxter.

Wrestling can be a difficult sport for beginners and even veterans. Baxter said he feels like he is just now getting good and when asked what advice he’d give to younger wresters he said, “Just be patient. It’s a hard sport but if you stay patient and keep working at it the results will pay off.” June 16 was the first day colleges could contact recruits and on that day Baxter received calls from the University of Buffalo and the University of Little Rock.

Baxter won the Triple Crown this year in wrestling by winning state in all three styles (Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco). He was the 145-pound UIL State Champion, 160-pound Texas USA Greco State Champion and the 160-pound Texas USA Freestyle State Champion. These accomplishments qualified him to represent not only Dumas but also the state of Texas at the Cadet National Duals in Loves Park, Illinois.

Following Texas wrestling team camp in Fort Worth, Texas, he and his family flew to Chicago, Illinois and then drove to Loves Park, Illinois to compete in the National Cadet Duals for both Freestyle and Greco. In order to become an All-American at the National Duals, a wrestler must win at least five matches without any losses. In Greco, Bronson wrestled to compile a record of seven wins and one loss.

Continuing his winning steak, Bronson earned the Cadet Freestyle All-American status as he went undefeated with a 7-0 record. While competing in the National Duals, Bronson also won his 100th single season win. Bronson and several of his teammates will be representing Dumas and the state of Texas in Fargo, ND in July.
