LUBBOCK – Cross-country regional competition took place on Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Lubbock at Mae Simmons Park. Dumas and Sunray student-athletes competed for a spot at the state competition in Round Rock later this month on Nov. 24.

There were a total of 260 runners between boys and girls in 4A competition for Dumas and 239 total runners for Sunray in 2A. The Sunray boys' team came in 14th place out of 15 teams, while Zahir Loya came in 19th individually and earned a spot for state competition. Katelyn Hernandez was the lone girl to make it to regional competition for Sunray. She placed in the top 10, coming in at third place, qualifying for a trip to the state meet. There were 123 total runners for the girls' division.

This was Hernandez's third trip to state and Loya's first for regionals and to state, according to Head Coach Jan Reed.

Dumas sent two boys to regionals, where there were 125 total runners in the boys competition. The girls placed fourth in team competition. This year, due to COVID, only the top three teams advance to state.

Team results indicate Dumas came in at fourth, behind Canyon, Decatur and Argyle. There were 135 individual total runners in the girls division. Sarai Chavez came in ninth place.
