The Dumas Demonette volleyball squads had their first home meet Tuesday, Aug. 13, versus Caprock High School. The varsity team struggled a bit, but kept the sets close and came out victorious. The sub-varsity squads swept their matches against the Longhorns.

The varsity team looked sharp, but did stumble a bit in a few sets. However, they came together and played as a team and fought until the end.

The varsity squad is comprised of Jazzy Ortiz, Aneesa Elizondo, Jaden Price, Sydnee Wackler, Brenley Rodriguez, Brooklyn Sianez, Landi Garcia, Macie Medrano, Hopey Cortes, Francine Hernandez, Litzy Terrazas, Niki Kent, Brooklyn Berryman, Abree Elsheimer and Destiny Saldivar.

The first set was close, but the Demonettes took the set over the Longhorns 25-23. The second set saw the Demonettes fall 17-25. Dumas bounced back in the third set, took the lead and didn't look back. The third set went to Dumas 25-14. They split the final two sets, falling in the fourth 16-25 and taking the final set 15-10 for the 3-2 victory.

Each Demonette appeared empowered with the same drive and tenacity as last year's squad. It showed during Tuesday's performance at the Dumas High School gym. They kept fighting and stayed in the game, never relinquishing that strong drive and determination that helped the team to the successful season a year ago.

Head coach Brittani James has said she feels the team has a lot of potential for this season, as she does for the JV and freshman teams.

The head JV coach this year is John Howard. He's excited to lead the JV squad to a successful season. There are nine members on the team right now, but there is a possibility of adding a couple more to the lineup at a future date.

The current JV roster is Emilie Rios, Kamryn Cox, Karyme Castillo, Janely Lozoya, Halie Coon, McKenzie Johnson, Aliah Jenkins, Sheda Madit and Vanessa Martinez.

The JV squad looked as impressive as the varsity as they kept the energy up and fired back against Caprock, taking the sets 25-21 and 25-14. The Demonettes kept it close, and didn't let up throughout the match.

The freshman set the stage for a thrilling night as they started things off Tuesday. They showed a forceful hand against the visiting Longhorns and were able to get the first sweep of the day by posting two wins of 25-11 and 25-7 to take the match.

James is excited for what this team has to offer this season. Leading the freshman squad this year is coach Carlyn Tolleson.

Nine girls are on the team this year and include Emily Loya, Naomi Miranda, Frida Valles, Desiree Gutierrez, Maris Rodriguez, Brooklyn Cox, Olivia McCutchan, Cami Velasquez and Joecelyn Dominguez.

This weekend, the varsity team is in Trophy Club, Texas, at the Byron Nelson Tournament. The JV girls are playing in an Amarillo tournament, while the freshman are hosting a tournament. After another round of varsity and freshman tournament play, the Demonettes return home for a contest with the Lady Eagles from Canyon on Tuesday, Aug. 27, beginning with the freshman at 5 p.m.
