Tuesday evening he Dumas Demonette varsity team beat the Canyon Lady Eagles 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-12) to take sole possession of second place in district.
The Demonettes came out sluggish in Game One as Canyon controlled the first half of the game. The Lady Eagles were up as much as nine points with a 17-8 lead.
The Demonettes fought back and went on an 8-1 run as they came within two points with a score of 18-16.
Canyon was able to stop the Demonettes’ comeback as they held them off the rest of the way and took the set with a score of 19-25.
Game Two started out with Dumas getting on the board early and taking a 3-1 lead.
Canyon tied it up at 3-3 and, from then on, each team matched point for point until the game was tied at 7-7.
After the Demonettes broke the tie with a kill by Abree Elsheimer, the Demonettes took control of the game the rest of the way, holding off the Lady Eagles for a 25-16 win.
Game Three started out much like Game Two as both teams matched points for a tie of 4-4. Dumas broke the tie and took a 10-4 lead before Canyon called for a timeout.
After their timeout Canyon went on a 7-2 run to come to within one point as they trailed 12-11.
The Demonettes were able to stop the Canyon comeback attempt and controlled the game the rest of the way, going on a 13-2 run to take the game, 25-13.
Game Four was all Dumas as they controlled the game from the start, taking the early lead and holding onto it as Canyon tried to crawl back in. The Demonettes kept expanding their lead to eventually take the match with a 25-12 score.
Abree Elsheimer ended the night recording 16 kills while Brooklyn Sianez, Brenley Rodriguez and Sheda Madit each had seven. Rodriguez had a good night at the net with eight and a half blocks.
Halie Coon and Karyme Castillo combined for 36 assists, Coon with 19 and Castillo with 17.
Jazzy Ortiz stayed busy as she had 19 digs on the night while Vanessa Martinez also had a good night recording nine digs.
The Demonettes record is 27-11 overall and 3-1 in district play.
The Demonettes take the court again as they host the Borger Lady Bulldogs, Saturday Oct. 9 at 12 p.m.
