The Dumas Demons had another Thursday night showdown on the football field as the Demons traveled to Caprock High School in Amarillo to take on the Longhorns. After a seemingly slow start for the Demons, Caprock was up 14-7, with minutes left in the half. Dumas scored twice late in the second quarter to go up 19-14 at the half. The Demons scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and won 40-14.
After Caprock scored first, the Dumas defense stepped up and didn't allow another score. Then with about 5:50 left on the clock in the second quarter, Spencer Williams found Josh Flores for a 50-yard score. Ah Lee Yart kicked the extra point and the score was tied at seven.
A couple of minutes later, Caprock's quarterback Joziah Balderrama completed a pass to Dustin Carruth for a touchdown. The extra point kick by Cason Polivoda was good and Caprock went up 14-7.
The Demon offense went to work and Williams quickly found Juan Romero for an 8-yard score. Yart's PAT was blocked, and the Demons trailed by one with 1:37 left in the half.
The defense made an outstanding play just seconds later as Emmanuel Ibanez grabbed the interception and ran in for another Dumas touchdown. They tried for a two-point conversion with a handoff to James Bednorz, but unfortunately could not convert. That put Dumas up 19-14 at the half.
The Demons continued their defensive dominance in the third quarter Roberto Ruiz intercepted a pass and completed a Pick-6. Yart added the PAT and just like that Dumas was up 26-14 with 10:41 on the clock in the third quarter.
Caprock was stopped on their next possession and had to punt. Jacob Mares picked up the punt and returned it for another touchdown. The PAT was good and Dumas jumped ahead 33-14 with 9:36 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Williams connected with Mares for another Demon touchdown to go up 40-14.
Dumas ran 63 plays to Caprock's 68. They had 336 yards of total offense, eclipsing Caprock's 253. Caprock had a slight edge over time of possession with 24:03 to Dumas' 23:57.
Williams was good for 10-of-21 passing attempts for 137 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He also picked up 77 yards on the ground with 15 carries.
Mares was the rushing leader with 107 yards on 15 touches. Bryan Mendoza was behind Mares and Williams with 34 yards on three carries, while Bednorz picked up 21 yards on four carries.
The receiving leaders were Josh Flores for 74 yards on three receptions; Romero, who had 28 yards on four catches; Mares with two catches for 18 yards; and Victor Chavez with 17 yards on one catch.
Cade Cox led the Demon defense with 4.5 tackles. Emmanuel Ibanez had four tackles and one interception. Diego Falcon had four tackles for the Demons. Dallan Dill and Ruiz each had 3.5 tackles.
Also for the Demons were Jacob Pinales with three tackles; and Aaron Sierra, Angel Quiroz and Yart each contributed two tackles. Brayden Bogg-Rushing had 1.5 tackles. Louis Ortiz, Zytavioius Torres, Christian Carrera, Cannon Speck and Mares each checked in with one tackle each.
Dumas will host the Plainview Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 16, at Demon Stadium. Kickoff time is set for 7 p.m. The Demons will be on the road next week, Oct. 23, to begin their district run at Hereford.
