The Dumas Demon varsity basketball team remains unbeaten as they defeated the Panhandle Panthers 62-53 Tuesday, Dec. 14.

The Demons and Panthers traded points in the early going until Panhandle grabbed the lead with a two point shot to go up 10-9 and held on to the lead for the rest of the first quarter with a score of 15-13 headed into the second quarter.

As the second quarter began the Demons tied the game at 16-16 but the tie was short lived as the Panthers regained the lead again on another two point shot to go up 18-16. As Dumas battled back they eventually took the lead on a Evan Hernandez two point shot to put the Demons up 21-20.

Panhandle quickly took the lead again on a two point shot and never looked back the rest of the quarter as they held on to the lead with a score of 33-29 going into halftime.

The Demons came out in the third quarter battling trying to come back and with every shot the Panthers made, Dumas answered back. The Demons eventually tied the game at 38-38. A two point shot by Khamarion Williams gave the Demons a 40-38 lead.

Issac Ortiz added to the Dumas lead with a nine-foot bucket to extend the Demons’ lead to 42-38. After the Panthers missed a three-point shot, Victor Chavez rebounded the ball then passed it to Williams as he sank in another bucket to give the Demons a 44-38 lead. Panhandle scored another bucket to come within four as the quarter ended.

The Demons entered the fourth quarter with a 44-40 lead and never looked back. Johnny Reynaga shot a seven-foot shot to extend the Demon lead to 46-40. The Panthers answered back with a three-point shot to cut the Dumas lead to three with a score of 46-43.

After a foul on Dumas, Panhandle cut the lead to one with two free throws for a score of 46-45. Reynaga gave the Demons a little breathing room with a couple of short buckets to extend the lead 50-45. The Panthers battled back to cut into the Dumas lead to one as they trailed 51-52.

Ortiz shot a seven-foot bucket to give Dumas some breathing room and the Demons never looked back after that as they held on to its lead and put away the Panthers 62-53.

Reynaga ended the evening with 19 points, six assists, three rebounds and one steal. Dominic Gardipe finished with 14 rebounds, 13 points, eight steals, two assists and one block.

Eleven of Gardipe’s rebounds came on the offensive side of the ball, giving Dumas some second chance shots. Dumas also had 20 steals as a team to Panhandle’s one steal.

With the win the Demons’ record sits at 14-0.

The Demons will take the court again Monday, Dec. 20 at 3:30 when they host the Dimmitt Bobcats.
