The Demonettes hosted Plainview Coronado on Monday, Sept. 9, in volleyball action. The eighth grade A team took 2-of-3 from Coronado, while the B team got the win in two sets.
The A team trailed most of the game, but they continued to battle. They kept the score close and were down 16-20 late in the first set. They were able to put four more points on the board, but Coronado got the win 21-25.
It appeared the Demonettes were warmed up and ready for the second set. Although Coronado kept it tight, the Demonettes got the victory 25-17.
It was a little more of the same for the third set. The score was tied at 10 at one point before the Demonettes jumped to a seven point advantage at 17-10. The visitors began inching their way back, but the Demonettes kept adding to their score as well. Dumas held Coronado to 19 points and got the win 25-19, and took the match 2-1.
"We started off slow, but came back to get the win," head coach Sia SanMiguel said. "We had a few hitting and defense errors, but our passing looked good. I am still proud of the way the girls played."
Emaree Chavez scored with four aces and two kills for the Demonettes. Kamryn Long came in with three aces and Keighly White had two.
Keirie Contreras and Ashley Suggs recorded an ace and a dig each.
Poppy Trujillo had four assists. Yubi Ortiz had five assists and three digs, while scoring with two kills and a tip.
Additionally, Illiana Ruiz hit a kill shot, while Aaliyah Garcia had a kill and a block. Jolee Jones had four kills and a block at the net.
For the B team, the Demonettes handled their opponents by taking the first two sets 25-9 and 25-11.
Head coach Gage Moore said he thought the girls played very well.
"Definitely played more loose and confident than we did the previous week," he said. "We need to keep building on that and we should really improve in the next coming weeks."
Five Demonettes scored aces in the contest. Brooke Brown and Jalila Chairez had two. Chairez also had two assists. Lyza Hernandez, Chloe Mares and Abigail Concha each scored an ace. Concha also had four assists and Hernandez had one dig.
Nora Lugo recorded three kills as did Isma Garcia. Haven Martin scored two kills, while Jessica Marinelarena had one.
The A team continued its win streak at 3, while the B team improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Demonettes host Westover Monday, Sept. 16, beginning at 5 p.m.
