This year marks the 39th annual Mag Burnett Memorial Tournament and the 12th Annual Mag and Charlotte Memorial Scholarship Tournament. The event is now named the annual Mag and Charlotte Memorial Scholarship Tournament.
This year, the tournament was held July 11 at the Pheasant Trails Golf Course. According to information provided by Rick Avina, head golf professional, the tournament aims to raise funds for awarding scholarships to qualified graduating seniors in Moore County. With assistance from the Pheasant Trails Ladies Golf Association, the scholarships are given to two or three graduating seniors. Applications are sent to coaches and guidance counselors at the high schools in Dumas and Sunray.
The Mag Burnett Memorial Tournament began in 1981. When Charlotte Stringer passed away, Dave Burnett, Mag's son, promoted a change in the name to the Annual Mag and Charlotte Memorial Scholarship Tournament, according to the information.
In 2003, the PTLGA started the scholarship fund to give back to the community for seniors who play golf locally.
Women throughout the Texas Panhandle, and a few from Oklahoma and New Mexico take part in the tournament, the information states.
