Haven Purcell, a Dumas High School senior, recently signed with Garden City Community College to play soccer for the BroncBusters on Feb. 6. Haven signed for the goalkeeper position, as she has played in that position during her time at DHS.
Haven wants to study psychology at Garden City.
“I'm going because I want to either do therapy for PTSD patients or therapy for families with special needs children,” Haven said.
Haven was accompanied at her signing by her family, family friends, her coaches and some of her teammates, even Dumas Mayor Bob Brinkmann was there to congratulate her.
Dumas High School soccer coach Raphael McHenry coached Haven for three years.
“She’s a great kid. She’s stubborn, a hard worker and she has definitely earned this,” he said.
Haven's mother, Natalia, couldn’t be more proud of her daughter. Haven is her first born and it will be hard to see her go.
“I am excited, and I am a little bit sad that she will be leaving, but I'm pretty excited for her. It's a great opportunity,” Natalia said. “Just the fact that we’re moving into this new phase, that's a bit bittersweet for us.”
Haven is excited about her achievements and can’t wait for this next chapter in her life.
“It's overwhelming, I kinda wanna cry, but I'm excited though,” she said.
