Well here I am again. Something occurred to me the other day, and I thought I would write a few words in concurrence.
Now that things have somewhat slowed down since school has been out, I realized I have now lived here in Dumas for a little more than a year. On April 13, 2018, I made the move here from Missouri for a new adventure. That was a long day. But I suppose it is when one is driving several hundred miles in one day. Not to mention traveling with a cousin, who is towing a trailer of my "stuff" and dealing with a tarp and wind.
Anyhoo, I finally made it here and after some jobs here and there, the opportunity arose for my current position.
In my first column, I basically shared a little more about myself. I had been here about a couple of months or so at that point.
I believe I went on about how this was a great opportunity for me and that I would do the best to my ability. After about eight months at the sports editor desk, I can honestly say that I believe I have done just that. It's had its ups and downs, and I have had a few doubts here and there. But, all in all it has been interesting to say the least.
I do feel a little more at ease with the job (although in some ways I am still learning some things). In the past eight months, I have received praise from my boss and have received recognition for my work among the huge Panhandle area. I received third place for best sports photos from the Panhandle Press Association and an honorable mention nod for some writing pieces from last year.
Not bad for a rookie.
I will strive to be better and improve.
I believe my background in journalism, broadcasting and other writing has helped me in this position and throughout my life.
As I said in my first column, "I will try to cover as much as I can, but I am only one person. I can only do so much. Part of my job also relies on the coaches as well. So again, I will do my best to cover the many sports available here in Dumas and Moore County."
I have had people tell me I haven't covered a certain sport or grade level, when in fact I have. But I am only human, and I can make mistakes. Sometimes it might go with the territory.
And I'll let the readers know if you have something you would like to send in, I (we) certainly appreciate it here at the office. I can't always guarantee it will be in the next edition, but I will work diligently to get it in as soon as possible (space permitting and other factors). I usually try to get it online as soon as possible after receiving the information.
Time has helped me develop and work into this position. I believe with more time, it can only get better.
