Last weekend, Saturday, Sept. 7, the Highland Park Lady Hornets visited the Dumas Demonettes. The varsity and JV squads took to the court to battle the Lady Hornets. The freshman squad sat out as there was no opposing freshman team.

The varsity girls appeared to handle the visitors as they swept Highland Park 25-19, 25-18, 25-20.

The first set was a close one. The Demonettes scored first and were up 5-4 before the Lady Hornets tied it at five. The Demonettes fell behind before they came back and tied the score at 11.

From there, Dumas took control and put it away.

In the second set, the Demonettes took a 2-0 lead early, and then jumped to a 13-3 lead. Highland Park began to rally, but the Demonettes held and took the second set.

The Demonettes took the third set, but fell behind early at 0-1. They quickly tied the set at one and kept pace before jumping to a 20-14 lead.

The Demonettes emerged victorious in the third set.

Brooklyn Berryman served up two aces from the service line for the Demonettes. Hopey Cortes had six kills, while Abree Elsheimer had five on the day. Elsheimer also had three blocks at the net.

Aneesa Elizondo and Sydnee Wackler helped the Demonettes by recording an incredible 19 and 12 digs, respectively.

Wackler had 15 assists and Francine Hernandez came in with eight.

Niki Kent put up three blocks of her own at the net.

The JV squad played hard and took command early in the first set by surging to a 6-3 lead. It went back and forth as the Lady Hornets kept it tight. The Demonettes were able to stay on top though, and they took a 19-12 lead.

Dumas got the win in the first set 25-14.

In the second set, the Demonettes had a 10-1 advantage of the Lady Hornets before they began edging their way up on the scoreboard.

Dumas held them down and scored 25 points over their 13 to take the match 2-0.

The Demonettes are hosting Bushland this weekend. They go on the road to River Road, Hereford and Liberal, Kansas before returning home to start district play against Perryton on Sept. 28.
