On Sept. 3, the young Demonettes from DJHS took on Westover. The seventh and eighth grade teams fell to Westover due to some mistakes, which will be cleaned up for the next time around, according to the coaches. They were proud of the way the girls played and know they work hard every day.
The eighth grade A team lost in two sets 11-25 and 17-25. Head coach Zeb Abbott said, "We played well, we just had too many first-game jitters." For the Demonettes, Jazlin Flores led with five digs, while Hannah Hernandez had two. Adi Farni contributed one dig. Hailee Vazquez had three kills. Bob Purcell recorded seven assists, three tips and two aces from the service line. Kennedy Clements and Rylee Schacher each had one kill, while Schacher also recorded a block at the net.
"They work really hard every day, so I know they will bounce back a lot stronger," Abbott said.
The B team suffered close losses in two sets at 16-25 and 19-25. Avrie Gutierrez had seven digs for the Demonettes. Arelie Vasquez came in with five digs and one kill. Addie Guest recorded five assists in the contest for the Demonettes.
Sania Reyes had two kills and one dig. Kaylee Law contributed four kills and two tips. From the service line, Andrea Aguirre had two aces and also recorded a dig. Nayeli Olivas had one dig and one kill. Camila Lopez was a force with 10 assists, one dig, two tips and served one ace from the line.
"The first game is always a learning curve," head coach Gage Moore said. "The girls were nervous, but once they got comfortable they played really well."
The seventh grade A team lost 23-25 and 9-25. Aileen Cota had two digs in the contest and an ace from the service line. Suzzette Reyes had a dig and an ace. Jalyssa Medrano also served an ace and had one dig, while Emarie Marquez had one dig, an ace and two kills. Jackie Herrera had one kill and one assist, while Aaliyah Chairez also recorded an assist.
The B team stats were unavailable at press time.
The young Demonettes go on the court Thursday with Coronado and will be home on Monday, Sept. 14, when Canyon visits.
